The universal design allows the clamp to be secured to the rod holder for either gunwale mounted or thwart mounted fishing. Because the rod holder secures the rod through leverage you need to choose either left or right, the rod holders are labeled on the bottom to eliminate confusion on which side of the boat they should be fished on.
If you paddle and fish tandem you would want one Left and one Right so that you are setup to fish out of opposite sides of the canoe.
